Battalion Manual

Battalion Commander Job Requirements

 

  • Supervise and responsible for all the affairs of the Battalion.

  • Must approve of all transactions taking place with the battalion.

  • Must know the duties of each persons job and must evaluate them on a regularly basis.

  • Will stay informed of all activities of the Pad program those which are related to this Battalion.

  • Will develop and maintain notebooks on each company activities.

    • Activities or participants in/and the results of all competition.

    • Records of other related activities.

    • Information of Projected activities.

 

  • Keep and update appointment calendar of activities and competition that the Battalion is interested in participating in.

  • Help plan activities and competition for the Battalion with company commanders administrative company.

  • Must approve of all check before releasing them.

  • Make sure all details of the activity or competition is written up.

  • Develop budget for each activity or competition.

  • Make sure all budgets are real and workable.

  • Approve of all supplies and equipment needs.

  • Set up appointment to contact businesses, schools, organizations and community groups.

    • Make a list of persons to contact.

    • Develop a presentation about the Battalion.

    • Develop a strategy to get point across.

  • Review of all budget plans and know what money is needed for the operation.

    • Develop a notebook to keep budget records in.

    • Keep a record of all expenditures.

  • Must attend various workshops, meetings, and community activities.

  • Contact newspaper, radio, and T.V. Station to set up connections for future publicity.

  • Will submit monthly reports to the Advisory Board on the Battalion status.

  • Shall deposit all funds of the Battalion to such bank accounts as designated, or set-up.

Drill Company Commander

 

1.Will review and be informed of all activities and information related to the Battalion.

2.Will maintain the standards that are developed by the drill division.

3.Will help with all drill activities of the Battalion.

4.Will go to various workshops to develop special drill skills and will help select other officers who will attend workshops.

5.Will be the spokesperson for the Battalion and the Pad Program.

6.Will help develop the program’s budget and see that it is adhered to be all concerned.

7.Will see that all information is passed on to the commanders about parades and marching units activities.

8.Will help raise money for the program and help find sponsors for groups.

9.Will have regular meeting with the officers.

10.Will submit a list of supplies and equipment needs to the Battalion commanders.

11.Will inspect all units at least once a month.

12.Responsible for collecting the attendance, enrollments, and all records and forwarding them to the administrative company commander and/or Battalion commander.

Flag/baton Company Commander

 

1.Will review and be informed of all activities and information related to the Battalion.

2.Will maintain the standards that are developed by the flag and/or baton division.

3.Will help with all flag and baton activities of the Battalion.

4.Will go to develop special flag and/or baton skills and will help select other officer who will attend workshops.

5.Will be the spokesperson for the Battalion and the Pad program.

6.Will help develop the program’s budget and see that it is adhered to be all concerned.

7.Will see that all information is passed on to the commanders about parade and marching unit activities.

8.Will help raise money for the program and help find sponsors for groups.

9.Will have regular meeting with the officers.

10.Will submit a list of supplies and equipment needs to the Battalion commander.

11.Will inspect all units at least once a month.

12.Responsible for collecting the attendance, enrollments, and all other records and forwarding them to the Administrative Company and Battalion commander.

Parade Company Commander

 

  • Will review and be informed of all activities and information related to the Battalion.

  • Will maintain the standards that are developed by the parade division.

  • Will help with all parade activities of the battalion design and float building.

  • Will go to various workshops to develop special skills and will help select other officers who will attend workshops.

  • Will be the spokesperson for the Battalion and the Pad program.

  • Will help develop the program’s budget and see that it is adhered to be all concerned.

  • Will see that all information is passed on to the commanders about parades and marching units activities.

  • Will help raise money for the program and help find sponsors for groups.

  • Will have regular meetings with the officers.

  • Will submit a list of supplies and equipment needs to the Battalion commanders.

  • Will inspect all units at least once a month.

  • Responsible for collecting the attendance, enrollments, and all records and forwarding them to the administrative company commander and/or Battalion commander.

Administrative Company Commander

 

  • Will review and be informed of all activities and information related to the Battalion.

  • Will maintain the standards that are developed by the administrative division.

  • Will help with all administrative activities of the Battalion.

  • Will go to various workshops to develop special leadership training and will help select other officers who will attend workshops.

  • Will be the spokesperson for the battalion and the Pad program.

  • Will help develop the program’s budget and see that it is adhered to be all concerned.

  • Will see that all information is passed on to the commanders about parades and marching units activities.

  • Will help raise money for the program and help find sponsors for groups.

  • Will have regular meetings with the officers.

  • Will submit a list of supplies and equipment needs to the Battalion commanders.

  • Will inspect all units at least once a month.

  • Responsible for collecting the attendance, enrollments, and all records and forwarding tem to the Battalion commander.

Officer’s Rank

 

            To become an officer, a student or cadet must first complete officer training, then must be recommended for commission, and finally a ceremony may take place twice a year at which time a new officer will be awarded, and cords are awarded. Once a person is commissioned an officer in the Pad program, that person will ALWAYS be an officer unless they are busted for disgracing the uniform or the program, get it taken away by a court martial, or resign their commission. An officer  that is heavily involved with other activities, or has to have an break from the program, may retire from the program with his or her commission, and return at some later time with their same commissioned rank.

 

SECOND LIEUTENANT is the lowest ranking officer in the program.

This rank is a single gold bar. This officer does not have power to give push-ups or give demerits. This officer may serve as a squad leader, and/or an administrative officer.

 

FIRST LIEUTENANT is the next ranking officer with a single silver bar.

This officer is usually a squad leader and responsible for all the members in his or her squad. This officer does not have power to give push-ups and give demerits and merits to other cadets that get out of line.

 

CAPTAIN is the next ranking officer with twin silver bars.

This officer is usually the commander of the unit, and is responsible for training, disciplining, and keeping records of his or her unit. This officer is responsible for the actions of each member in his or her unit, and will be held accountable for them.

 

MAJOR is the next ranking officer with a Gold Leaf.

This officer is usually the commander of three or more units. This person’s position may range from company commander to a Battalion commander of a small Battalion. All officers with this rank or higher are senior officers.

 

LIEUTENANT COLONEL is the next ranking officer with a silver leaf.

This officer usually has the command of six or more units which makes up a small Battalion and is the executive commander of a Battalion or the Battalion commander.

 

COLONEL is the next ranking officer with a gold eagle.

This officer is usually in charge of a large full Battalion, or several small Battalions.

 

BRIGADIER GENERAL is the next ranking officer with one silver star.

            This officer is usually in charge of three or more Battalions or a small Briade.

 

MAJOR GENERAL is the next ranking officer with two silver stars.

            This officer is usually a full brigade commander.

            This officer is usually in charge of three or more Brigades.

 

GENERAL is the highest ranking officer with four silver stars.

NON Commissioned Officers

 

            Getting strips or non commission rank can be done by unit commander, advisors, or any senior officers in that command. This rank can be given when ever the commander or advisor chooses to do so. Once this rank is given to a cadet it will stay with this cadet until he or she gets busted or move up in rank. When a cadet quits the Pad program or leaves the program over a year or longer, his or her rank is no longer valid, so if or when the cadet return to the Pad program, he or she must start all over again for rank. 

 

E-1 NEW CADET who just join the Pad program.

E-2 PRIVATE has one stripe which should be given to a cadet who has been in

the program for six months and have no demerits outstanding or give this stripe for outstanding accomplishment in less than six months time.

E-3 PRIVATE FIRST CLASS has two stripes; one pointed up and the

other is round at the bottom. This rank implies that this cadet has either been in the program for one year with no outstanding demerits, or has been an outstanding cadet in less time.

E-4 CORPORAL has two stripes, both are pointed up. This rank is given

to a cadet who has been in the Pad Program over eighteen months with no outstanding demerits or has been an outstanding cadet in less than eighteen months.

E-5 SERGANT has three stripes, and all three are pointed up. This rank

is given to a cadet who has been in the Pad Program for over two years with no outstanding demerits or have had special unit training for that rank.

E-6 STAFF SERGANT has four stripes with three pointed up and one round at

the bottom. This rank goes to the cadet who has been in the Pad program for over two years with no outstanding demerits, or have had special unit training for this rank.

E-7 SERGANT FIRST CLASS has five stripes with three pointed up and two

round at the bottom. This rank will go to the cadet who has been in the Pad Program for three years with no outstanding demerits, or have had special program training for this rank.

E-8 FIRST SERGANT has six strips with three pointed up and three are round

at the bottom. This rank will go to the cadet that has been in the Pad program four years with no outstanding demerits or have had special program training for that rank.

E-9 SERGANT MAJOR has six stripes with a star between the top three and the

bottom three. The top three are pointed up and the bottom three rounded down. This rank is the top rank for a non commissioned officer and will only be given to a cadet that have been in the Pad program five years or have had special officer training but not commissioned.

THE ORDER IN WHICH EACH RIBBON IS TO BE WORN

 

The first set of ribbons (if a member of the National Society of black Jacks) will be the Black Jacks ribbons. The black jacks membership ribbon is the first ribbon to be worn on the bottom right on the first ribbon bar. Next is the Pleage ribbon, then any other Black Jacks ribbons in the order of importance. The next set of ribbons (if a member of the National Association of Commissioned Officer) will be the NACO membership ribbon and then any other NACO ribbon in order of importance.

            Once the first ribbon bar is filled with three ribbons, the second ribbon bar will have the next most important ribbon starting at the right of the ribbon bar. This bar will be placed above the first ribbon bar on the uniform. The next set of ribbons (if have or is now participating in the JROTC program at school) will be the JROTC ribbons in order of their importance, once approved by the program directives. The next set of ribbons will be Parade and Drill ribbons and their order of importance is listed for officer and for cadets (see next page).
